College of Western Idaho should offer a Bachelor of Applied Science Degrees (BAS) in Business Administration

Last month I was invited to attend Gov. Brad Little’s announcement of his “Idaho LAUNCH” program which aims to prepare Idaho’s students for Idaho’s workforce needs. Idaho LAUNCH provides grants for education and training programs. Legislators and a host of businesses participated in Gov. Little’s announcement. As a former member and chair of the College of Western Idaho Board of Trustees, I was pleased to lend my support for this needed program. At the same time, I am fully supporting CWI’s goal to deliver a Bachelor of Applied Science Degrees (BAS) in Business Administration for under $20,000. I am pleased to see some many businesses join the effort. The Idaho LAUNCH and CWI’s BAS in Business Administration is a “win-win” for everyone especially students who need that targeted education to succeed. The Idaho LAUNCH program received legislative approval and students are applying. However, CWI’s proposal needs the State Board of Education approval. THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL DECI...

Teaching and faculty

CWI Library was recently awarded an Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, which is the academic library equivalent of winning an Academy Award. The award is given by the Association of College and Research Libraries ( ACRL ) to honor an  outstanding community college, college, and university library each year. It is a great achievement! That day included a College of Western Idaho training session for our innovative faculty. I listened to a presentation about new technologies and how to reach out to the new generation of students. I thought about my first experience teaching. I was in adjunct speech teacher at Boise state. I was 23 and nervous. It was a night class. When I introduced myself, several people seemed shocked. “You’re the teacher! You look like you’re in high school.” In the early 80s, technology consisted VHS tapes, old educational videos, and one old decrepit podium. I made sure that I used every available technology to engage my students...

Internet Trolls, the College of Western Idaho, and public vs. private

Finally, "Social Media" has finally affected me “personally.”  The phenomena “Internet Trolls” has come to roost on my social media presence.  I use the term “personally” because my social media presence is public despite my efforts to make private.  I am an elected official so NOTHING is private. I have found out that people lurk in the shadows on the Internet. Years ago when the concept of the Internet was just a vague notion, I started to research the implications of the Web for my job.  As the CEO of the Idaho Association of REALTORS®, I was concerned yet pleased that the Internet could help my members. I wanted to be ahead of the curve technology-wise to prepare my members what I knew would change the world of real estate forever. About 20 years ago, I made a speech in Boise in front of about 400 Realtor® members about the advantages of using the Internet for their businesses.  I told the members that I searched for a house on the Inter...

College of Western Idaho: Promises Made. Promises Kept. Dunham Is Running for Re-election!

IT IS OFFICIAL! I am running for re-election to the Board of the College of Western Idaho representing Zone 5! I am asking for your vote November 8th! Though I represent Zone 5, I am “elected at large” meaning ALL voters in Canyon and Ada Counties elect trustees. I have been on the board since the beginning in July of 2007 when we had one vacant building, a hundred acres, no programs, and no personnel. We didn't even have a phone.  Nevertheless, we had huge dreams and expectations!  In those nine years, CWI has become the hallmark of community college innovation, serving more than 20,000 students every year and helping business and industry to succeed.  Look what CWI has done so far!  https://youtu.be/GWYXZy3-ArY My job as a trustee is not finished yet. I am seeking another four-year term because I want to complete the accreditation process, finish our strategic planning process, and help develop our campuses in the valley. I hav...
